media whores...

homeless person in iraq

homeless person soon-to-be (gaza strip)

homeless person in toronto

just a few questions: is anyone else bothered by the seemingly fleeting contrast between the homeless man and the black suv/computer store background? i just find it weird seeing how the homeless man resides in toronto, canada the land of opportunities. so why must people like him exist in such circumstances? and can anyone please explain to me why we have donated millions of dollars to the tsunami victims and forgot about everyone else? iraq? africa? and even here in toronto? israel? lebonon? are these lives worth less? will we still care when media leave?

i put on the t.v and what do i see? anderson copper of cnn? i smell propoganda. postmodernism. consumerism. etc etc etc. to all these are not unfamiliar terms. they have been discussed, vivaciously, among academic, media, and lefty public discourse circles, especially in recent decades. even 'lethal' and i had a small discussions about the problems palestinians are enduring right now. (which i will post on here some other day) times like these is when i wish a social justic guru would step up and say/do what needs to be done. great men died for history and yet history repeats itself. but where are thy great men of today? i am talking about men from history the ones who made difference. ie: gandhi, albert camus and marx. yet we take our time to acknowledge and priase fucking celebrities and pop culture.

that being said however, be more like angelina jolie and make a difference, breath in media, be more aware of your surroundings, be a media analysis and critique, be a intellectual…therefore, i challenge all of you to shake off the hypnotic sensationalism that is mainstream media. read more (preferably alternative) news sources. get out of the goddamn house. speak up loud enough for me to hear you in toronto ontario. and for chrissake, don’t limit yourself to one-good-tsunami-deed. pleeeeeeeeeeeeease…..

fatima i completely agree with you on that.. i actually had a good rant on my journal about the donations going strickly to tsunamis victims.. i watched a new news show on cbc newsworld last monday called "the hour" ( mon-thurs at 8pm, repeated at 11pm) with george strombolopous.. i can never spell his last name.. but in any event he interviewed bob geldof, and it was really interesting. me thinks you should check it out.... but in any event i'm in fully agreement with u.. although the tsunami was tragic.. there are gross astrocities happening all the time around the world.. so why is it that people can dig into their pockets to help tsunami victims but not others who suffer?? it's something that really bothers me. but of course the reason for this is because the media is a corporation that needs to make money, so it will only show certain news and report certain events and leave out others completely.. lest we forget that when the american soliders "accidentally" killed for canadian soliders it was all over canadian news, but funny thing.. i never saw it once on american news..

abso-bloody-lutely. I read on the make poverty history site that as many people who died in the tsunami die every five days of poverty

just like a note on the canadians killed by americans--we did hear about it. but i think it was mostly written off by most of the country, although it was head-slappingly stunning to some of us.

Part of the problem comes in the fact the U.S. media is primarily Liberal. They give distorted information, making up their own facts and have no way to support what they "think" and how they "feel".

As far as helping the homeless...in the U.S. too many people take advantage of what the Government gives them. If people start giving to the "Homeless" fund, then you will never get these people off the street...they will have no desire to better themselves...because the "more fortunate" people would be supporting them...this should be an obvious one even for Liberals to figure out.

Also, maybe the people with money realize what it took them to achieve what they have and want others to try and do the same. Don't ask for a hand-out but have a Hand-up.

But Liberals do not want to get people back on their feet, as long as people need assistance, the Democrat/Liberals will always have support for their party.

I look forward to your continuing comments on my blog, just think...not often the U.S. depends upon Canada for something.

A couple of problems when it comes to things like "helping" causes, such as homelessness, with tax dollars. For starters, there's no number as to how many homeless there really are. The groups that get funding to help the homeless claim very high numbers, but some question just how accurate those estimates really are. Thing is, you can't just go out and do a head out. The numbers constantly change. Then there's the fact that the amount of money being given to these groups is enough to provide apartments for every homeless person (using the possibly inflated numbers used by these groups). Most of that money disappears long before it gets to those who need it - just as it does for most large charity groups, Medicare, the education system, the military... (just how much of all that money donated to help tsunami victims do you think has actually made to those who need it? Try taking a look - it's pretty depressing).

Beaurocracy is the biggest money vaccuum out there.

Then there's the fact that some people actually choose to be on the streets because they prefer to getting a job. I had a boss that, when approached by a homeless panhandler, offerred the guy a job instead. The panhandler was apparently too good to paint a floor. Not that I had anything to complain about. I got paid to do it, instead.

The thing is, there are no simple answers. Throwing money at the problem isn't solving anything. Other solutions have to be found. As for myself, I refuse to donate money to any of these groups, no matter how much I believe in the cause because I know it's just going to be wasted.

The fact that the guy who calls the US media 'liberal' has a hawk and a flag for an avatar says it all. I hate the way the right hijackspatriotism... the US was set up because britain was not sufficiently liberal for fucks sake.

Can you think of a place in the world exluding Iran, Syria etc where the media is less liberal? and on that premise, do you think they are somehow a good model to follow?

The petty crap is no clash of civilisations, but a clash of barbarisms... the most extreme, illiberal and unenlightened aspects of east and west, fighting it out, as the rest of the wolrd groans and ignores them.

You make a good point about the effect that free market economies have even on their own people... how 'free' is that homeless dude?

On the other hand, the idea that charity begins at home is a good one, but it doesn't have to stay there. If people who are against authoritarianism, unchecked power and jingoism at home unite with those against it in the Irans of this world... imagine what we can achieve together. we can make things better at home and over there.

unfortunately eagle man and the mullahs are to busy bombing the crap out of each other to realise that.

On a final note, I'd rather be starving than shelled and starving...

I'll chuck ya a link, by the way.

El Tom, you must be an idiot...it's not a Hawk and the U.S. Flag, it's the Bald Eagle with the U.S. Flag...

You being unable to distinguish between the hawk and America's Bald Eagle demonstrates your intellectual level...not very high.

History tells us that the United States of America was set up so people could have Religious Freedom and less control by the "Government". Do you know what Liberalism actually is or you just some kid who thinks they know EVERYTHING.

In case you don't know, Liberals like Government Control, America was formed so people could get away from this...is this what they teach you in the U.K., maybe you should come to the U.S., go to a 3rd grade classroom setting and begin to learn the truth about history.

Yeah, it's called 'The Melting Pot', no? haha I love you Americans, really.

Kronleo you're alright, seem kind of spunky.

the reason america was formed was because of a lack of liberal freedoms... to free speech, association, practice of religion... taxation without representation... all of the things that british conservatism rallied against. you'll find that your most influential pro-independance thinkers were liberal... like Hume, Locke etc etc etc.

also, you should note that the idea of freedom of religion came from freedom from religion, because we had one legal church that forced itself on to everyone.

no-one should have their faith decided for them=liberal freedom. that's why they are currently against school prayer.

Yes, they were "liberal" but Liberal with their time, not the same "Liberal" as it is today in the U.S.
